A series of meditations on prayer
The Previous Medetation: Prayer 04 - Our Father in heaven
The next Meditation: Prayer 06 - Your kingdom come
Psalm 8 v 1 HCSB
Yahweh, our Lord, how magnificent is Your name
throughout the earth! You have covered the heavens with Your majesty.
In this first prayer,
the focus of our prayer is still on God. In it we (who in Christ through the
Holy Spirit received God as our heavenly Father) ask, that He enables us
through His Spirit to honor and praise His Name.
With this we also ask
that we can know God correctly. It means acknowledging that our heart and mind
are too dark to know God by our own strength. Furthermore, we also acknowledge
that it is the most important thing in life to know God correctly, as well as
that we can know God only in Christ and through his Spirit.
This prayer is also a
sigh to praise and glorify God in all His works and that He is holy. It is
therefore to turn away our focus of self-glorification and confidence in our
own strength so that we will only praise and honor God in all his works.
Furthermore, we also
acknowledge that because God is our Father, his honor and glorification for us
as his children is the most important thing on earth.
With this we also ask
that God will give through his Spirit that, in our whole life, our thoughts,
words and works, we will put his honor and holiness first.
The purpose of this
prayer is to convey that we do not want to blaspheme or desecrate God's Name,
but that we want to honor and glorify His Name in everything.
With this prayer for
the sanctification of God's Name we pray that we will know Him in such a way
that we will honor and praise Him in everything so that we can live worthy of
His Name through the working of the Holy Spirit.
Amen
